Inventor festival with inspiration and play

A visit to the Technical Museum of Denmark in Elsinore is a journey through centuries of innovative inventions with a wide collection of prototypes and technological treasures ranging from steam engines to space technology. You can walk under the wings of Ellehammer’s first aeroplane or awaken the creative urge with the museum’s Lego bricks, which feature in the story of one of the greatest technical successes of the 20th century.

In 2025, the Technical Museum of Denmark was able to realise the Inventor Festival with 300,000 DKK in support from the Otto Mønsted Foundation. It premiered as a platform that aimed to spark the curiosity, creativity and technological understanding of children and young people. The main event was the full festival day in August and a number of other activities throughout the year, and a total of 7,192 children, young people and adults participated in the Inventor Festival.

The activities excelled not only by inspiring anyone with an enthusiasm for technology, but also by reaching out to a somewhat overlooked young segment by offering them a professional community and content they could use directly in their education.

Inspiration and role models

The main event was divided into a closed Friday event for HTX students and a Saturday where the doors were open to everyone. On Friday, 500 HTX students attended to hear keynotes and presentations, participate in workshops and visit stands organised in collaboration with education programmes, companies, inventors and the Inventor Advisory Service. The latter was able to showcase inventions that have been commercialised and highlight the fact that many of the inventors have the craft background that the students are training for. The students were also able to meet with the Inventor Counselling Service and get advice from professionals about their exam papers and get useful tools for innovation and business practice. In addition, the day was also a meeting point for socialising across classes and schools. And the programme seems to have been in demand, according to the subsequent evaluation.

“What motivates me about the Inventor Festival is that it’s a special day just for HTX. HTX is one of the best programmes, but it is always overlooked. Our students need to meet others who are like them, like they are here today.”

“What motivates me about the Inventor Festival is that it’s a special day just for HTX. HTX is one of the best programmes, but it is always overlooked. Our students need to meet others who are like them, like they are here today,” said Thomas Kryger Andersen, Rector of Hillerød Tekniske Gymnasium, who has also been involved in organising Friday’s content.

Saturday’s programme targeted children, young people and families, with 300 children and adults participating in robot and satellite building, VR experiments, creative inventor workshops and programming. It was a day where creativity and technology went hand in hand with both well-known and professional lighthouses as inspiration.

High expectations for 2026

In 2026, an even bigger crowd is planned when the Inventor Festival is repeated on 28-29 August.

“We’re repeating the success with a day for HTX on Friday. Several HTX schools have agreed to participate and we expect up to 1000 HTX students to participate in workshops with AI specialist Andreas Refsgaard, Aalborg University and others. On Friday, the Inventor Advisory Service will give students feedback on their exam projects and hold a prototype workshop. Students can also meet representatives from Danish business, entrepreneurs and higher education at stands around the museum. For example, there will be representatives from the Danish space industry in the museum’s exhibition Space Return,” says Sascha Pepke Møller, Project Manager at the Inventor Festival

Saturday’s programme offers exciting talks on innovation and puts inventions into perspective, for example in relation to the security situation around the world. There will be inventor activities for all ages and anyone with a good idea in the drawer can have a one-on-one conversation with the Inventor Counselling Service.
